Chapter Fifteen

Garrick blinked. He couldn’t have heard right. “What did you just say?”

“A dragon egg,” Lord Valdis repeated.

“Dragons haven’t existed for hundreds of years,” Garrick said.

“Millennia, actually,” Lord Valdis corrected him. “But wyverns are considered to be a type of dragon, as are certain sea-dwelling beasts and a handful of land-dwelling creatures.”

Garrick shrugged. “Sure. I’m not a historian. My point is, the type you’re talking about, the kind that breathe fire and destroy cities, those are long gone. So how could a dragon egg still exist after that long?”

“As you said, you are not a historian,” Lord Valdis said. “Trust me. It’s there.”

“And if it’s not?”

“You’ll be paid anyway.”

Garrick blinked again. He couldn’t believe his ears. It didn’t make any sense. Why would Lord Valdis pay him either way?

But as strange as Lord Valdis’s request was, the weirdness of it wasn’t Garrick’s main hang-up. Once he’d completed this job, he’d planned to put his earnings directly into finding Noraff and Phesnos. The payment order to the Central Bank of Caclos was a solid lead.

Yet even if it didn’t pan out, it didn’t matter how much coin Garrick spent or how much time he’d have to invest to find them. He would burn through every last piece of gold to find them and make them pay for what they’d done.

“I also require a certain ancient text that will accompany the egg. It is a tome of rituals.”

Garrick nodded. A tome of rituals and a dragon egg?

“So, Garrick…” Lord Valdis stared at him with those dark, unnerving eyes. “Will you help me recover a piece of history?”

Garrick hesitated. “Lord Valdis, I—”

Lord Valdis waved his hand again, and four more guards with two more chests emerged from the darkness.

Garrick’s eyes widened.

“Think carefully, Garrick,” Lord Valdis warned. “If you do not accept, I can make this offer to someone else.”
